FIRST AID FOR PETS FROM THE AMERICAN RED CROSS
Class helps pet lovers meet health and safety needs of four-legged loved ones

The American Red Cross is known for helping to keep Washingtonians and their families healthy and safe. Now, with the new Pet First Aid course, families can learn how to keep their pets healthy and safe. Dogs and cats are more than just pets—they’re family. And just like any other member of the family, pets deserve to be cared for and protected. That’s why the American Red Cross has developed the Pet First Aid course.

The North Cascades Chapter recently received their first dog and cat manikins. “The dog, a German Sheppard, and the cat, a calico need names,” stated Barbara Maas, Chapter Programs Administrator. “We are holding a naming contest until June 1, 2008. People can submit names to the chapter and winners will receive their choice of prizes-a Pet First Aid kit, a Dog First Aid book/DVD, or a Cat First Aid book/DVD.” If multiple submissions of the same name are received, a winner will be picked in a random drawing of the name. There will be one winner for naming the dog manikin and one for naming the cat. Community members are invited to stop by the chapter to “meet” the dog and cat to be named, if inspiration is needed. “The manikins seem to be a big hit with people coming into the office,” stated Maas. “Some people are hesitant when first told about pet CPR, but most come around when thinking about whether or not they would perform CPR on a beloved pet.”

The first Pet First Aid class* is scheduled for Thursday May 8, 2008 from 5:30pm-9:00pm at the Red Cross office in Okanogan. The cost of attendance is $35 per student, and pre-registration is required. If multiple family members wish to attend, there is a discount available. Class participants will receive the Dog First Aid or Cat First Aid comprehensive guide and accompanying DVD, which includes everything owners need to know to keep their pets healthy and safe. From basic pet owner responsibilities, like spaying, neutering and administering medications to managing breathing or cardiac emergencies and preparing for disasters, these guides offer information and advice pet owners can trust.

Just like with people, accidents and emergencies can happen to animals – so being prepared could make a lifesaving difference. For more information about Pet First Aid training or to submit names for the manikins, contact Barbara at (509) 422-3440 or maasb@northcascadesredcross.org.
